GHPL Round Up: WAFA Keep Flying , Kotoko and Hearts Held

written by Editor

Week 13 of the 2017 Ghana Premier League produced mouthwatering results across the various league centres led by the Kasalgu Park in Utrecht, Tamale. The Stars of the East denied Accra Hearts of Oak on three separate occasions in a 3-3 thriller involving Bolga All Stars.

At the Tema stadium, the Harbour Boys secured their first win in six games against relegation battlers, Great Olympics. Malik Antrie found the opener for the Tema based side before J ames Akaminko confirmed the winner after Abel Manomey had restored parity for the 1970 champions.

Life after Lugarusic seem not to be going as anticipated as Kotoko are yet to win their opening two premier league games under coach Frimpong Manso and Godwin Ablordey. The Porcupines drew one -all with Fire Boys at the Baba Yara Sports stadium.

Kotoko are without a win in their last five league games. Zakaria Mumuni’s goal was cancelled by a second half goal from Kotoko’s Abass Mohammed after a missed spot kick by Kwame Boahene.

It was a festival of goals at the Tamale Utrecht park with both Hearts and Bolga All Stars scoring 3 in a 6 goal thriller. Ivorian import , Alex Kouasi, scored a goal in the dying embers to secure a point for Accra Hearts of Oak who are facing defensive crisis due to injuries to first choice centre backs Inusah Musah and Reuben Gnagne. Returnee midfielder Winful Cobbinah provided two assists in the game billed for the gods of the land.

It was all barren at the Nana Gyeabour Fosu Park as Bechem United and Ebusua Dwarfs drew goalless. The goalscoring prowess of goal king prospect, Nicholas Gyan, was curtailed by the defensive Bechem United side that failed to feast on the few chances that came their way.

Inter Allies arrived home from Elmina with a hard earned point against Elmina Sharks. The yawning mouths of the Sharks couldn’t swallow the Tema boys in the 0-0 stalemate thanks to the goal keeping heroics of Kwame Baah.

At the Sogakokpe park, WAFA made it 18 points out of 6 games as they continue their overwhelmingly impressive start to the season. The Academy Boys defeated the Scientific Soccer Lads 2-1. Togoleses striker Komlana Agbediniadan bagged a brace to nullify the effort of Liberty skipper , Samuel Sarfo Maldini. WAFA leads the table with 29 points after 13 rounds of fixtures.

Champions , Wa All Stars were undone by a 44th minute goal from Alfred Okai Quay at the Golden City Park in a 1-0 defeat for the Blues over the Northern Blues. A controversial rolling ball was swung in by Stephen Amankona without the consent of the referee only for Alfred to guide the ball home. It ended Wa All Stars 5 match unbeaten run away from home.

Abedi Pele Distant Himself From FA Seat

written by Editor

Founder and bankroller of division one side Nania FC, Abedi Ayew Pele says he is not interested in the Ghana Football Association (GFA) top job which is expected to be vacant when current president, Kwesi Nyantakyi draws the curtains down on his over a decade reign as GFA president.

The position has been up in the air following Mr Nyantakyi’s decision to stepdown in 2019 with lots of names being bandied around.

However, the former Black Stars captain ,who subscribes to the notion that competent ex-footballers must be allowed to handle football in the country has refused to take interest in being Nyantakyi’s successor.

“Nyantakyi has done his best for Ghana football. If he wants to stepdown in 2019 then that’s good. We now have to focus on the vacancy that will be created by his exit. I don’t have any interest in the GFA but I believe we have capable Ghanaians who can handle the FA.

Its good that we leave football for football people to manage just like how the boxers are now handling boxing but I’m not interested”. Abedi averred

Kwesi Nyantakyi is set to call it quit on his FA position due to his growing responsibilities at both CAF and FIFA and names such as current Veep George Afriyie, PFAG boss Anthony Baffoe and former GFA vice president Fred Pappoe have popped up as potential replacement to Nyantakyi

Busted : Ghanaian Footballer Arrested In South Africa Whiles Driving Stolen Car

written by Editor

South Africa- based Ghanaian footballer , Bernard Morrison, who plays for Orlando Pirates, has been arrested for being in possession of a stolen car. The former Ashgold SC attacker is facing charges of robbery after been busted with the stolen car.

He was reportedly arrested on Tuesday morning by the eagle eye police in the country. Reports in the Daily Sun hinted that the midfielder was arrested while driving the car he recently acquired.

The new has however been embraced with mixed feelings and shocks because of his religious nature of the Ghanaian import. The Orlando Pirates attacker is highly revered for his religious commitment despite the luxurious nature of footballers in recent times.

The player reportedly brought a car through an agent, but the agent didn’t pay the instalments to the rightful owner. Morrison’s compatriot , Edwin Gyimah, recently traded the PSL for a new lease of life in the Supprettan league in Sweden after inking a two year rolling deal with Helsingborg.

Attram And Tom Strand Patch Differences , Team Up With With The Wonder Club

written by Editor

Management of Accra Great Olympics have succeeded in bringing together Godwin Attram and coach Tom Strand. Attram swore never to assist the Swede who was appointed the head coach for the wonder club last week.

Closed door meetings with the top ranking members of the 1970 and 1974 GHPL champions , however persuaded the club legend to make a U-turn to the club. The two managers again confirmed the wonderful nature of Accra Great Olympics by holding training programmes at different venues with a section of the players each.

The decision to stay United as gruop now means that, Tom will lead the club whiles Attram supports from behind.
Here is the club’s general manager, Oluboi Commodore, on the importance of the decision.

“All along we’ve been working behind the scenes trying to bring them together but it was difficult because of some decisions taken by others.

“At long last I’ve been able to bring them together as a unit”, Oloboi revealed.

Accra Great Olympics remained one of Ghana’s traditional clubs left in the top flight but their managerial style in recent times is injurious to the image of the two times league champions.
