Ghana football was in the news for the wrong reason when FIFA announced a life ban for referee Joseph Lamptey for what it calls “match manipulation”.
During a world cup qualifier match in November 2016 between South Africa and Senegal, Referee Joseph Lamptey awarded South Africa a penalty and penalised Kalidou Koulibaly for handball, but replays showed the ball hit his knee.
South Africa went on to win 2-1.
David Laryea, who assisted Joseph Lamptey on the day, had charges against him dismissed by Fifa’s disciplinary committee.
Referee Joseph Lamptey can however appeal to FIFA and the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
