The 2015/16 Ghana premier league champions Wa All Stars kick start their home campaign with a midweek clash against newcomer Elmina Sharks. The Northern Blues slammed to a 2-1 defeat in Accra thanks to a late header from Thormas Abbey in their season audition away to Hearts of Oak.
The reigning title holders welcome the Elmina based newbie to the Malik in search of three points that will steady the sinking ship in their match day one game rescheduled because of continental assignment. Series of recurrent injuries denied Wa All Stars four of their starters in the capital trip and the quartet might not return any time soon for Enos Adipah in his quest to stabilise his generous defence. The make shift back line for the Wa based side have kept 3 clean sheets in their past 9 fixtures in all competition since the end of last season.
The injury ravaged side however showed their class in the latter stages of the Hearts game and could have snatched a point on another day. A late equaliser from Richard Arthur look set to extend their unbeaten run away to Hearts but a late Abbey header found the back of Rashid Siedu’s net for the visitors.
At their favourite Wa Malik Jabir Park, the newly assembled side will be chasing their first three points since that iconic 2-1 win over Aduana Stars in September 2016. It has been exactly 168 days since a league game was played at the Wa Park and their clash with Elmina Sharks could be the missing tonic in the football fraternity up north.
Elmina Sharks, new comers into the top tier league in Ghana football, heads to the upper West region with 4 points from the 12 available having just edged out Tema Youth in the last league fixture. A last gasp goal from Benjamin Tweneboah dented the hopes of Tema Youth in a 1-0 win for the Sharks.
On the statistical table, it looks dicey for the visitors, who are looking to emulate the feat of Liberty professionals as the first team to leave the Wa park with three points.
Wa All Stars last suffered a home defeat on November 2015 at home to the white Angels from Dansoman and in a 1-2 home reverse.
The champions have since gone 16 straight games without a reverse including 12 clean sheets.
Wa All Stars are however generous in their last three home tie failing to keep any clean sheet.
In the month of March since 2007, Wa All Stars are unbeaten in the 13 fixtures honoured (P13, W9, D4, L0). The host are however on a run of one win in the last four games played in March with 3 drawn games.
Across the 2015-16 season, Wa All Stars suffered 1 defeat in their 8 midweek ties (1-0 defeat to Kotoko) , producing 5 wins and 2 draws.
In the last 10 league fixtures overall, Wa All Stars are on a run of 5wins, 1 drawn game and 4 defeats.
Wa All Stars have failed any clean sheet in the last 3 home games.
Elmina Sharks have scored twice on the road in their 180 minutes whiles Wa All Stars have scored 5 in the last 2 home games.
